Historical analysis shows that long spells of equitable prosperity and internal peace are succeeded by protracted periods of inequity, increasing misery, and political instability.These crisis periods--"Ages of Discord"--have recurred in societies throughout history. In "Tentakels van de macht" onderzoekt Niels Matheve of en op welke manier de hervormingen van na de Eerste Werldoorlog een effect hadden op de sociale samenstelling van het belangrijkste politieke machtscentrum in België : de regering. Hij botst daarbij op verrassend stabiele elitenetwerken ; old boy-netwerken die vaak teruggaan tot het einde van de negentiende eeuw maar die door de oorlog een cruciale nieuwe dynamiek krijgen. Het zijn immers de leidende figuren uit het bezette België ('14-'18) die er ondanks alle daaropvolgende schandalen, politieke crises en publieke opstanden in zullen slagen om het politieke spel ook de volgende twee decennia te domineren. Maar hoe valt dat te rijmen met de groeiende democratisering en de gewijzigde electorale verhoudingen na de oorlog ? En als het niet de politieke partijen waren die de regeringsvorming en het beleid naar hun hand zetten, wie dan wel ? In dit boek geeft de auteur een gezicht aan de elite en de elite-netwerken die tijdens het interbellum in België de toon aangaven. Hij verklaart hun macht en invloed aan de hand van familiebanden, opleiding, relaties, professionele activiteiten en de rol die ze speelden tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Tentakels van de macht werpt zo een nieuw licht op de machtsverhoudingen en machtsstrijd tijdens een van de meest vewogen periodes uit de belgische politieke geschiedenis.
